Fifth Grade ELA Researches Ethics in Business Fifth Grade ELA Researches Ethics in Business: Fifth grade ELA students are researching large companies’ business practices for a project based on human rights and business ethics.   The assignment developed after students showed interest in taking on a research project while learning about human rights activism. Fifth grade ELA instructor Alexandra Ackerman worked together with elementary school librarian Beth McCheyne to structure the project in a way that would be manageable for fifth grade students.   “I feel strongly that a lack of human rights is one of the world's biggest problems right now,” said Sylvia Brock, a student in the class. “I thought it would be great for us to research these things and do what we could to fix things that scream in the face of human rights."   ...
Vocal Jazz Performs in the Darien Lake Music Festival Vocal Jazz Performs in the Darien Lake Music Festival: South Seneca High School’s Vocal Jazz Ensemble traveled to Darien Lake on May 11 to participate in the Darien Lake Music Festival.     Participating school music groups perform and then receive a grade, rating and comments from judges. They compete against other schools in the same class and compete against other school groups for the “Grand Champion” distinction.   South Seneca High School received a grade of 97.5, which is rated as “Outstanding as Distinction.” They won first place in the Show Choir class and, overall, finished only behind Grand Champions of Choruses, Buffalo Arts Academy.   Aden VanCleef, an eleventh-grade tenor, received an award for “Outstanding Soloist” for his performance of the song "Does ...
Four Heroes of Vietnam Four Heroes of Vietnam: A recent unit in Global class taught ninth grade students about four soldiers from the South Seneca region who died while serving in the Vietnam War.   The unit is scheduled to correspond with Memorial Day and is intended not only to enlighten students about Vietnam and some local history, but also serve as a reminder of the meaning behind the holiday.   Global instructor Joe Brewer prepared a series of posters detailing the four men who all went to high school in the area that now makes up the South Seneca Central School District. Students Attend Entrepreneurial Panel Students Attend Entrepreneurial Panel: The South Seneca students in the Introduction to Business and Accounting classes attended an entrepreneurial discussion panel Tuesday, April 24.   Students had the opportunity to hear from a group of local business owners as they discussed their personal stories of starting and maintaining their own businesses. The panelists also offered advice to future entrepreneurs. The panel was made up of Christy Wilcox of Christy’s Corner Studio, Larry Warfel of BLG Auction Services and Dan Grillone of Cobblestone Coffee Roasters.   "The speakers provided insightful stories about their journey in entrepreneurship," said Brandon Swanson, a senior at South Seneca.   The panel was held at the Geneva Public Library. South Seneca High School Chorus Visits Guest Conductor South Seneca High School Chorus Visits Guest Conductor: The South Seneca High School Chorus visited choral conductor Dr. Adam Potter and other faculty on Thursday, April 5 at Roberts Wesleyan College in Rochester, New York.    Dr. Potter was a classmate of Mrs. Kyla Perry, 6-12 Choral Director at South Seneca Middle High School, when they were undergraduate students at Houghton College. Dr. Potter holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Music from Houghton College and a doctorate from Florida State University where he studied with renowned choral conductor, arranger, and composer Andre Thomas. Students also worked with Dr. Grace Cummings and voice professor, Professor Constance Fee.   Dr. Potter offered his own choral warm ups to help the group work on certain techniques. Welcome to Pre-Kindergarten Welcome to Pre-Kindergarten: South Seneca Elementary School UPK Orientation Night Pre-Kindergarten Orientation Night will be held on Thursday, May 10, 2018 from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. in the elementary school auditorium.   This will be an evening dedicated to informing parents about the Pre-Kindergarten program. Childcare will be provided.   Students who will be 4 years old before December 1, 2018 are eligible to enroll in our full-day Universal Pre-Kindergarten program. South Seneca Central School does not charge tuition for out-of-district students, but out-of-district parents will be responsible for providing transportation for their child to and from school.   Registration packets will be available that evening or by calling the main office at 607-869-9636 ext. 4154.

Save a Life Tour Save a Life Tour: We are having the Save a Life tour visit our high school on Monday, April 23. This is a great program that stresses safety and warns against the dangers of distracted driving. Parents and community members are welcome. Our 50 minute assembly starts at 7:45 AM. Ovid Community Garden Ovid Community Garden: The Ovid Community Garden will soon begin its second growing season after being established adjacent to the South Seneca Middle/High School grounds last year.   Since last year, students and community members have worked together to maintain and develop the garden. South Seneca students were involved in the construction as well as cleaning up and winterizing the garden, which is currently home to about 20 plant beds.   Patty Parsons, a Middle School ELA instructor and community garden board member, is working the garden into her class time and curriculum. Social Studies Department Revamps Curriculum Social Studies Department Revamps Curriculum: Social Studies teachers at South Seneca have been working hard to update their class curriculum to focus more on conceptual learning through an inquiry-based approach to instruction.   This evolution is part of a broader effort across New York State – called the NYS Social Studies Framework – which aims to better prepare students for college, careers and participation in civic life.
