Cornell Cooperative Extension Helps Bring Local Food to our Cafeteria Cornell Cooperative Extension Helps Bring Local Food to our Cafeteria: The Seneca County Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) is helping South Seneca cafeterias serve students more local produce through the Farm to School program.   The program began in 2016 and is supported by funding from the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets through CCE. A recently secured second round of funding will carry the effort forward for two more years.   Every few months, CCE staff meet with Kathy Bishop, the South Seneca Food Service Supervisor, to develop the menu for Farm to School days. The goal is that at least one Thursday each month the menu will be made entirely from ingredients grown and processed in New York State. CSforALL Consortium and South Seneca Develop Technology Education CSforALL Consortium and South Seneca Develop Technology Education: The South Seneca School District is taking steps along with an organization called the CSforALL Consortium to advance computer science education for all students.   The CSforALL Consortium is a national hub that works to enable all students to achieve computer science literacy as an integral part of their educational experience at all age levels. This year, the CSforALL consortium teamed up with TST BOCES and Cornell to help bring this mission to the region and support school districts in developing their computer science curriculum.   A generous grant from by Dell, totaling $140,000, has provided TST BOCES and component districts such as South Seneca access to a variety of cutting edge technology that can be implemented into any grade level’s curriculum. Support for Hannah Podgorny Support for Hannah Podgorny: The senior class wants to support Hannah Podgorny as she works through some medical issues so they created a T shirt .  The design was developed by Marris Eck-Ose (senior) and produced by Sleeman Design (assisted by Rebecca Gilfus). The t-shirt is deep purple (Hannah's favorite color) and has a quote from Hannah's favorite actress and humanitarian, Audrey Hepburn.    The cost for the shirts are $15 for adult sizes and $10 for youth sizes.  The price is just for cost.  There are order forms in the Ovid office with Karen Denmark and Interlaken with Doris Jennings.  The senior class will be donating shirts to the Rundell family.     The first orders will be sent out to print on Thursday afternoon.  If ...
Teaching Environmental Science Through Fly Fishing Teaching Environmental Science Through Fly Fishing: South Seneca Elementary students in the Extended Day program had a chance to learn about their environment by fly fishing.   Through a program called “Children in the Stream,” inspired by a training conference of the same name hosted by Dr. Michael Jabot and Alberto Rey at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute, fifth grade science teacher Ms. Liz McCheyne uses fly fishing as a structure to teach environmental science and conservation.   Students learned to identify aquatic macroinvertebrates to determine the health of a body of water. Fly tying helped students learn about the stages of insect development that lures are meant to mimic. They were able to visit a local, privately owned pond to learn casting and practice fishing. Using Multiplayer Classroom Games to Encourage Learning Using Multiplayer Classroom Games to Encourage Learning: Mrs. Karen Sanchez has implemented collaborative classroom quiz games to engage students in her Spanish classes in an exciting, new way.   Quizlet Live and Quizizz are interactive games that are designed to provide an active and fun approach to class material. Students compete in real time, either individually or on teams, for the highest score on subjects being studied.   “Since I don't use a textbook for my courses, these activity websites allow me to easily customize them to our curriculum,” Mrs. Sanchez said. “I have used them for everything from basic vocabulary and grammar to sentence structure and even literary analysis.”   Both games allow users to search from existing sets made by educators on a wide variety of subjects and topics, ...

The Duke's Ball The Duke's Ball: The South Seneca Falcon Players and the South Seneca Falcon Music Boosters have created a new scholarship to honor the memory and legacy of long time music teacher and community member Robert "Duke" Gerlach, who passed away last spring.   We are excited to have created a new and unique way to raise money to support this scholarship as well.
