Message from Jim Drew, Work Environment Health and Safety Coordinator, TST BOCES:
For many years, we have been recommending hand washing as the best defense for virus and germ control in accordance with CDC guidelines.
We do not recommend the use of alcohol based hand sanitizers at all, especially for students, but we do recognize that the non-alcohol hand sanitizers fill an appropriate gap when hand washing is not feasible. The non-alcohol based hand sanitizers are available from the same companies that produce alcohol based sanitizers, but they contain quaternary disinfectants that do not create dermatitis or alcohol poisoning (especially in small children).
Alcohol based hand sanitizers are also extremely flammable and create a hazardous materials storage non-compliance by codes.
The CDC and TST BOCES Health & Safety recommend handwashing frequently and the use of non-alcohol sanitizers only for times when hand washing is not feasible.
