March 2017

Dear Parents and Guardians of South Seneca Music Students,

What an amazing year last year was for our Music Departments here at South Seneca.  The S.S. Falcon Music Boosters have been very busy all year supporting your children in their musical endeavors in so many ways.  We wanted to take this opportunity to give you an overview and information about the Music Boosters and our work over the course of a school year.

We are going to inform you about our year in 2015-2016.  What began with Homecoming in the fall with our Pep and Marching Bands performing, rolled into the High School Vocal Showcase in November, featuring soloists and raising money for our Vocal Jazz students to assist in raising money to attend the Darien Lake Music Festival Competition.  We then had a great experience with All County Band in Groton in November as well as some of our students being selected to participate in Jr. High Area All State in Cortland.  December brought with it the NYSSMA Winter Conference in Rochester for some of our vocal students, followed by our amazing holiday concerts for our Elementary, Middle and High School programs.  The new year brought with it our participation in The All County Chorus Festival in Newfield.  In February a number of selected students from South Seneca were invited to perform in the HS Area All State Conferences for Chorus.  March is featured as “Music in our Schools” month, which brought us into the season of the Musical Production; The Elementary Coffee House and the Middle-High School Pops Concert.  With April began the gearing up and rehearsals for Marching Bands, Drum Line, and Color Guard.  The NYSSMA Solo Festival for both instrumental and vocal students took place in May in Ithaca.  We are proud to say that over 50 students in Elementary, Middle and High School took advantage of this experience for feedback and scores that would help them as they grow musically.  In May we also supported the Vocal Jazz group as they competed at the Darien Lake Music Festival, earning a 96.5- an Outstanding Level of Distinction for our Vocal Jazz group.  As many of you are aware our Marching Band, Color Guard, Drum Line, HS Concert Band and HS Jazz Band performed in competition at the Seneca Falls Pageant of Bands.  Each of these music groups brought home trophies including a three for 1st Place; one for 2nd Place and one for 3rd Place.  Our Elementary Music Program rounded out their music classes with a day time concert for family and friends, as well as their spring band and chorus concert which included a crossover section of high school students who sang with the 5th Grade Band.  We had a fantastic end of our school year with The Gorham Pageant of Bands;  our Middle School and High School Concerts; performances by multiple groups at Interlaken Old Home Day and the Strawberry Festival, as well as graduation.

This year we anticipate all of these wonderful events as well as our district hosting a Fall All-County Instrumental Music Festival, bringing in 8 districts to perform together in honors bands and orchestra.  Students from around the county were selected to perform higher level music for a great learning experience.  The elementary 5th grade band is also taking a trip to perform at Sea Breeze Amusement Park in June for judges.  We look forward to these events added to all of the exciting events that our children performed in last year as well!

Throughout the school year our Music Boosters are actively working to raise money to support all of these wonderful programs and help make them possible.  We are very grateful to all of you who support us through our sales of Falcon merchandise, our annual pulled pork dinner; our annual Coffee House and our on-going passing of the bucket at concerts.  These are the primary means of fundraising for our booster group.  We rely on all of these fundraisers to help pay for such things as: concert clothing for HS and MS bands and chorus groups;  our Vocal Jazz group costumes;  NYSSMA Medals and Area All-State and All-State registration and meals.  We also help to support on an as needed basis, the transportation and meals for performing groups and individuals.  We also have our annual maintenance and insurance for our Booster’s group and our Band Trailer.  Our Boosters also pay for other items such as recorders, drum heads, batteries,  various equipment, and other incidentals for performing groups as needed by teaching staff.  We offer scholarships for music camps and support individual musicians selected to participate in additional music programs even beyond what we can offer here at South Seneca.  In addition to all of this, in any given year there may be additional support needed, depending on our level of participation in programs.  Our hope is that by doing all of this all students at South Seneca have opportunities to grow and develop as life-long musicians.

We are hoping that by providing you with a general overview of what we do and provide each year for and with your children, our community and parents can better understand why our fundraisers are all so very important to us.  If at any time you should have questions or concerns about what we do as Music Booster or if you would like to volunteer to help us in our efforts, please feel free to contact us to share your thoughts.  We consider all of our Parents and Families to be a part of our Booster organization- we welcome you to all of our meetings for your input and help.
