Music In Our Schools Month began as a single Advocacy Day and celebration in New York on March 14, 1973.  Now, Music Programs across the state and country celebrate having Music Education in our Public School all month long.

This year, the theme is “United in Music.” The South Seneca Music Department would like to highlight some alumni this month.

Abigail “Abby” Sherry graduated from South Seneca in 2024. She is currently a Freshman Music Education Major at SUNY Fredonia. While at South Seneca, Abby participated in HS Band, HS Chorus, Jazz Band, Vocal Jazz (as a percussionist and as a singer), Senior High Area All-State for Chorus, NYSSMA Solo Festival, Drumline, Marching Band, and the Musicals. Some of her favorite musical experiences at South Seneca include Vocal Jazz rehearsals and duet projects, a trip to see Into the Woods, and chaotic Pops Concerts.

Abby appreciates that she was encouraged to be diverse in her music making at South Seneca. This has helped her in her college career.  Some opportunities that were available to her in our small school setting such as accompanying Vocal Jazz on percussion before being a singing member, conducting Middle School students at their moving up ceremony, being able to be a percussionist in Band and a singer in Chorus etc., ended up being impactful as she continued her education as a current Music Education Major.

Abby has some words of wisdom for the new generations of music makers at South Seneca. “Don't take your experiences for granted. Enjoy every second that you're given in your music program, because I guarantee you will miss it once you graduate.”

We thank Abby for her time and devotion as a music student at South Seneca, and we are so proud of her accomplishments studying to become a music teacher at SUNY Fredonia!
