On October 27, students in the Creative Crafts classes had an in-school field trip to work with local crafter, artist, and mother of three South Seneca students, Christy Wilcox. Christy volunteered her time to share her knowledge of quilling with the students of South Seneca and offer them help with their quilling artworks. Quilling is a 16th century artform where thin strips of paper are rolled to create various shapes and designs. Students are exploring this craft as part of the multicultural curriculum for Creative Crafts, and are modernizing their final products.
Christy showcased some of her tangible and digital works, offered demonstrations and feedback to students, and spoke of her love for the craft. At the end of the presentation, students walked away with more knowledge and loved the presentation.

October 27: A note was discovered today in the Middle-High School threatening gun violence specifically on Monday, October 31, and was signed with a student’s name on it. It was quickly discovered by staff and the School Resource Officer in the building that the note was written by a different student with the intention of getting the other student in trouble. The threat of violence itself was not deemed credible, and in fact, the author of the note will be kept out of school entirely while awaiting a Superintendent’s Hearing.
As always, we urge parents to speak with their children about the seriousness of making threats of gun violence. While it has now become something that students will do from time to time, schools have no choice but to treat these incidents with severe consequences.

Lodi Whittier Library is inviting you to a webinar on Thursday, October 27th from 10-11:30 although the actual presentation will be 10-11 with time for Q&A. Registrants will receive a video of the presentation in case they can’t attend “live” and a digital toolkit of handouts.

Libraries are for everyone, including readers who struggle with dyslexia or other learning differences. During Dyslexia Awareness Month, join Lodi Whittier Library Director Beth Bevars, Marion Waldman and Tracy Young from Teach My Kid to Read, and Human Rights Attorney Laurie Puhn Feinstein for an informative and inspirational look at how libraries can serve all readers. Beth will share the story behind Lodi’s Literacy Hub, a program created to provide struggling readers and their families with evidence-based phonics literacy materials. Seeded with money from an Outreach Mini Grant in 2019, the Hub has grown to offer support and guidance to families and schools within her community. Teaming up with Teach My Kid to Read, an organization dedicated to working with libraries to create community literacy solutions, has magnified the message across NYS and the country. If offered drugs or alcohol, change the subject. Offer an alternative that you could do instead. If you’re with your friends, suggest doing an activity or grabbing a bite to eat. It might just be the push they need to put down the drugs or alcohol and do something a little safer. For example, say: "I’m good. Wanna go play basketball?" or "No thanks. Let’s go grab a snack." Never take a pill that didn’t come from your doctor or pharmacy/store. Drug traffickers are using fentanyl in their pills and marijuana/cannabis to get people addicted and come buy more. Fentanyl in the smallest doses can be fatal. If you need medication to help you feel better, talk with your parents or caregiver – never buy anything online or arrange for a sale through social media. If someone offers you something to swallow, you could say, "No thanks. I don’t know what’s in that,” or "My parents would kill me if they found out,” or "I could get kicked off the team for doing that.”
It is Red Ribbon Week 2022 and the theme is “End The Trend” to encourage students to stop the use of substances! The South Seneca School District is excited to partner with the Seneca County Substance Abuse Coalition. Keep the discussion going at home, at the dinner table, at family outings, and with friends and extended family. Thank you.
