One last South Seneca winner from the Great Lakes Data Jam was announced earlier this week:
5th grader Emily Williamson was an honorable mention.
She took home a cool $100 thanks to her "DDT Song" about how DDT, a widely used pesticide, impacted bald eagles and osprey.
"One thing that I enjoyed was being able to combine two of my favorite things together, singing and science," said Williamson.

Have a case of the Mondays? Well, here's a picture of some happy South Seneca third graders to cheer you up!

Here is an update on the mural project in the elementary building. It's incredible how quickly it's coming along! Mrs. Lutter is doing a fabulous job.

Drama and Dance Extended Day had a lot of fun last night! In addition to practicing some familiar dances, students also learned basic ballet steps. We also talked about using our imagination. Students will use cardboard boxes to create something out of their imagination. Will it be a rocket ship? A race car? We'll see!

Change is coming to the walls of South Seneca Elementary...and it's looking great! The kids are already so excited to see the walls refreshed with new designs from Mrs. Lutter!

It's almost showtime!

The 5th grade just finished reading the graphic novel "Investigating the Scientific Method with Max Axiom." As a culminating project centered around the scientific method and scientific writing, students used common materials to make lava lamps!

South Seneca 5th grade students participated in the Great Lakes Data Jam! Each student analyzed local data to identify trends and patterns, asked questions about their findings, did some research, and shared their findings in a scientific report. These projects took many forms, from board games and posters to infographics, songs, poems, and short videos.

Deputy Palmer will be coming in once a week, for the next 10 weeks, to teach DARE to all 5th graders.

Incorporating the senses into learning literacy is an important part of our elementary Skills program! Here, a student shows how they can use their sense of touch to practice their letters.

It is National Read Across America Day — what's everyone reading?

So many of our families have stepped up to support the Reading for Education fundraiser for the Reading Celebration program in the elementary building. We are so, so appreciative! The primary products are reading materials, and here is a sampling of how one teacher's library is growing because of our community! THANK YOU!

Students in Ms. Ackerman's 4th grade ELA class have been tackling individual learning projects. They chose the subject and how they wanted to present their findings. They should be proud of how the final products turned out!

Will you be our Valentine? Love seeing these heart-themed projects from Kindergarten and pre-K!

Our partners at the Council for Alcoholism and Addictions of the Finger Lakes is launching a new program in Seneca County, called the Triple P! The Triple P (Positive Parenting Program) is a FREE program offered through the Council on Alcoholism & Addictions of the Finger Lakes to help improve the lives of families in Seneca County. Topics are divided into four sessions, and participants can choose to attend one, two, three or all four sessions. Each session is two hours long and caregivers are encouraged to discuss problems they are experiencing so that they can find positive solutions for themselves, their children and their families. Sessions are for adults only and are focused around two age groups: children ages 0-12 and teens. No registration form is required: Just a simple phone call to 315-789-0310 to register for the next session (offered day and evenings to accommodate the caregiver’s schedule, individual or group discussions).

Thanks to the School Community Extended Day group, the elementary school is all decked out for Valentine's Day with messages of love and care for our students!
