Public Notice May 8 UPDATE 10:30am: The Middle-High School in Ovid has now lifted its Shelter In Place (Lock In) protocol, as law enforcement has completed its initial investigation of the note left in the Nurse’s Office earlier today. The student leaving the note has been identified, and language in the note is in reference to a particular game played among this student and friends. The note was taken from a bag and passed along before being left in the nurse's office today. There is strong confidence that the note itself is not about a real, physical threat to the school. We thank our community for understanding that when a note like this appears without explanation, we must act with safety first in mind. We are grateful, too, for our staff and students who know exactly how to proceed when our protocols are in place.

Public Notice May 8: The Middle-High School in Ovid is conducting a Shelter In Place (Lock In) protocol this morning, May 8, while law enforcement conducts an investigation related to a handwritten note left in the Nurse’s Office that references a bomb placed outside of the school building in the surrounding area. At this time there is no reason to deem the threat credible, and the Shelter In Place is purely for precaution while law enforcement investigates. We will provide an update when the investigation is completed and the Shelter In Place is lifted.

Last week, a select group of eight South Seneca students attended the Cornell Splash Program, and had a chance to explore various topics through taking classes with Cornell student leaders.   The Cornell Splash Event is an amazing Saturday, offered once a year on Cornell’s campus. Students in grades 7 to 12 can learn about any subject. Splash is a very open style of learning, designed to let students explore anything that they are passionate about. If you’re passionate about math and science, they have courses on gravitational waves and complex analysis. Perhaps, you’re more interested in the humanities and want to learn about ancient history and creative writing. Maybe, you’re just looking for things that aren’t normally taught, like an Introduction to Immunology explained in terms of Starcraft or four-player chess (known as bughouse). Cornell students become the teachers for the day and choose their own class topics and content, allowing them to teach on what they’re most passionate about!  Our South Seneca participants were able to sign up for classes in things they were interested in learning more about. The idea that we all can “Teach Anything and Learn Anything” promotes curiosity and a positive growth mindset! Our South Seneca Students had a great time being curious and sparking interests at Cornell!

The S.S. Falcon Players Drama Club sponsored a Middle School Paint & Slurp Night last week! The class was led by Artist & S.S. sophomore Aven Bower at the Uptown Diner in Ovid! 19 Middle Schoolers had a GREAT time painting and slurping milkshakes and creating beautiful pieces of impressionist art! Our goals include helping young people recognize that art, and the creative process overall are life practices that can help to reduce stress; create hope and connect us to our community. We want our students to be involved in community activities and experience creativity individually and together. A huge THANK YOU shout out to Kendra and Eric Reece for hosting the event in the Diner and providing the tasty milkshakes and snacks!! We hope to host another Paint & Slurp Night before the end of the school year, for high school students too!!
